Letter From Ken Ulman

Date:  9-11-09

Dear Friends,

We are all saddened by the tragic accident yesterday evening at Route 32 and Amberwoods Way and by the death of Brian Emery.  This accident also intensifies our concerns about the dangers of traffic on Route 32 and the need for safety improvements.

As you know, the County has already identified Route 32 as our top safety priority for the State Highway Administration.  Last night, I spoke directly with Governor O'Malley to emphasize my concerns and he assured me that he would direct the Department of Transportation to act quickly to identify and implement appropriate safety solutions.

We will continue to keep you informed as we receive any additional information.  If you have any questions, please contact Ginnie Gick, my Community Liaison, at 410-313-2450 or ggick@howardcountymd.gov

Dear Friends,

I want to take the opportunity to thank each of you for your ongoing advocacy to improve traffic safety on Route 32, particularly in light of the tragic accident at River Road.

As you know, Route 32 is a State road and, as such, falls under the jurisdiction of the State Highway Administration.  Howard County is committed to working with SHA to implement safety improvements and has identified these improvements to the State as a top priority.  I have attached for your information a copy of my annual transportation priorities letter to the Maryland Department of Transportation.

Our Department of Public Works will be working closely with SHA to address these safety issues.  Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ginnie Gick, my Community Liaison, at 410-313-2450 or ggick@howardcountymd.gov

We will continue to advocate for essential safety improvements until the dangers present in this area have been fully mitigated. Thank you again for your concern and your efforts.

Best regards, Ken Ulman
